Q: Two yoga teachers walk into a bar. How do they pay their tab?

(answer at bottom)

Anna Dubrovsky

In 2006 Anna quit her journalism job in Los Angeles and moved to India to study yoga under the renowned TKV Desikachar. She had no intention of ever teaching yoga – just an insatiable curiosity about the practice and its purpose. But after seven months of eating, sleeping and breathing yoga, it seemed selfish not to share the teachings. Anna returned to the US, completed a 500-hour teacher training, and began leading classes that combine the fluid, playful style of her LA days with the measured, therapeutic approach she embraced in India. The onetime political journalist also became a frequent contributor to Yoga International, Yoga Journal, and other wellness publications.

Anna was living the dream – getting paid to jet to yoga conferences and pick the brains of America's top teachers – until she had two babies in less than two years (insert screeching tire sound effect).

These days, you're more likely to find her at a soccer match or dance recital than a yoga conference, but her practice continues to serve her. As Desikachar put it: "The success of yoga does not lie in the ability to perform postures but in how it positively changes the way we live our life and our relationships."

Alli Mitchel

Alli loves sunshine and spending time outside doing anything active. She believes in never growing up and not taking life too seriously. She found yoga in college, via YouTube, and loved how different it felt from all the sports and workouts she did growing up. After moving to Hawaii, she dove into teacher training, becoming certified in power yoga and then yoga sculpt. Over the past few years, she has been on a journey to create internal peace amid external chaos and change, finding her way back to the mat again and again.

Alli is passionate about creating spaces that feel like home. Nothing makes her happier than moving, breathing, and sweating with others while listening to her favorite jams. She feels fortunate to be able to share her passion for physical and mental health with others and lucky to be in the business of sparking joy. It’s her hope that everyone — herself included — sees their full potential as the unique individuals they are!

Barb Shippy

Barb’s first job out of high school was at a women’s gym in her hometown of Hemet, California, greeting members and showing them how to use the equipment. When an aerobics instructor didn’t show up for work one day, Barb was thrust into leading her class. She winged it—and loved every minute.

In the years since, Barb has worked as a personal trainer and taught countless group classes, including step aerobics, sculpt, and kickboxing. But yoga has her heart. More than a fitness program, yoga targets mind, body, and spirit. She loves how it makes her feel and sharing the practices with others. She has taught yoga for more than 20 years and completed a 500-hour teacher training through Oceanside’s True Nature School of Yoga.

Barb also loves spending time in nature, from meditating at Harbor Beach to hiking Potato Chip Rock to participating in triathlons. She and her husband split their time between Oceanside and the mountain town of Idyllwild.

Yoga teacher Gaby Ahlstrom

Gaby Ahlstrom

Born and raised in Chicago, Gaby got through the bitter Midwest winters at her local Bikram yoga studio. An avid sailor, she found peace in the slower pace of the yoga practice and gained strength for her racing.

Gaby moved to San Diego in 2023, and through her yoga practice, found a welcoming community, mentorship, and the courage and tenacity to make the city her own. She enrolled in a teacher training program, then another, completing 500 hours of yoga training in recent years.

Gaby embraces the challenge of teaching to all bodies and abilities, striving to create practices that meet the individual needs of each student.

When she’s not teaching, Gaby can be found near the water, in her art studio, cooking in the kitchen, or spending time with her cat.
